Okay. Now back to the business at hand.
I couldn’t think of anyplace to go. My main leads had proved to be dead ends and there were no other local candidates. But someone was still out there waiting to do more mischief or worse if the dead cat is any indication.
I thought back over the last few days following the threads, connecting the dots, trying to find something, anything I might’ve missed. Initially, it looked like someone was out to sabotage Janice Smithson’s studio, but then it turned against Natalie Levesque. It started with a series of mishaps; the falling props and loose equipment then escalated to more sinister things like the girl’s shoes and the pins. It’d be interesting to find out if she was in any of the areas when the so-called accidents happened. Perhaps the so-called accidents were staged as a diversion away from the main purpose, take out Levesque. But if this was the case, then who was behind it? And why?
I could only think of two options where the answer might lie: It was someone from within the local community who lost this opportunity and wanted revenge, or, it was something specific to the girl.
Then it hit me. Something specific to her.
Maybe I’ve been looking at this all wrong. Maybe the things that have been happening followed her here from Montreal? I needed to talk to St. Jacques and the girl again. Especially Pierre St. Jacques.
I spent the rest of the afternoon making calls to the studio and St. Jacques’ apartment. I learned that Natalie had not come in today and was likely still at her apartment. I also managed to get a meeting with St. Jacques set for later tomorrow. The meeting would be at a neighborhood bar where he usually went for a drink at the end of the day before eating dinner.
In the meantime I would go see Natalie Levesque.
